Re: [foxboro] SunPCi cards in D&E boxes

We used to test and support Sun's cards for Windows support on a SPARC
station. In fact, I still have one of the old SunPC cards that Warren Brown
"lent" me many years ago. We called this "Windows on I/A".

However, sales were virtually nil so we stopped tracking their upgrades when
the boxes went from SBus to PCI.

Your issues are going to be the age of our OS.

However, there are two paths to explore:

1) The hardware solution from Sun.
2) A software solution based on a PC running one of MS's multi-user OSs and
Citrix Metaframe (www.citrix.com <http://www.citrix.com> )

You know about the former option, but may be not about the latter.

In the latter option, you setup a server with your applications under an OS
like Windows XP Professional (which supports Remote Desktop) or Windows NT
Server: Terminal Server Edition. These versions of MS OSs support multiple
users and application and desktop sharing.

Then load Metaframe for Solaris 2.5.1 (if it is still available) on our box
and Metaframe for XP/NT:TSE on your server.

This software will let you access the XP/NT:TSE machine in much the same
manner as you can use X-Windows.

In answer to the next question, no I haven't done this lately either.

Subject: [foxboro] SunPCi cards in D&E boxes

        Greetings List,

I am exploring options of installing SunPCi I or II cards to both D
(Ultra
        5) & E (Ultra 30) platforms. We are presently operating at version
4.3. Our
desire is to install Windows 2000 professional in order to load
third party
software for easy access by our operators without adding additional
terminals to our control rooms. Either I'm not looking in the right
places
or Foxboro has virtually no literature published on this
configuration. So,
I am asking for the full Monty on the ins and outs, and pitfalls of
this
        quest.

        Thanks to everyone in advance,
        Dwight Flinchum
