[I sent this using my company e-mail an hour and a half ago, but it
hasn't been distributed. It could be gone, or it may be delivered in
the next couple of minutes. Sorry for the possible duplication.]
Peter,
You and your colleague at Xcel Energy, along with a whole host of
users, are missing a lot of list traffic. I know, because I got a lot
of bounces for you guys. (For example, I got >100 bounces of this type
between late Monday and this morning.)
The problem is SMTP error 446, here's the verbatim error message:
Unable to deliver message to the following recipients, because
the message was forwarded more than the maximum allowed times.
This could indicate a mail loop.
The real problem is the default settings in Microsoft Exchange server,
which is set to trip this error at 15. Each time the message is handed
off from one server to another (or from one app in a server to another
app), the counter is incremented. By the time a message is transferred
by the SMTP server and sanitized by the virus/malware server on the
outbound leg, and repeat on the inbound leg, 15 is invariably too low
for many mail systems.
But many a mail administrator would rather do something else than
bumping this up to help their users continue getting legitimate
e-mail. I know this because I used to relay this information to some
users so they can talk to their mail admin. More often than not, an
excuse was given as to why this number cannot be arbitrarily
increased. So I take the path of least resistance and not worry about
it anymore.
Sorry, this doesn't help you, but at least you know where the problem
lies.
Duc
