From my SCSI experience I remember this after installing a drive from "stock"
that did not have any partition table at all.
Did you try to do a format?
On B boxes you would get some dialoges asking for the geometry from the
drive. After entering these you have to define a "backup label" in the
partition menu. (this is partition entry 2 i think) Here enter the size (for
instance 4924c, at least the same figure you enteredn previously) and label
the drive.
This works for SCSI of course, so you may still be in trouble :-(
