Re: [foxboro] SaveAll Strategies

Walleed!
We have great experience with a "save all" script designed by Marcel and I
can only recommend to use this way of backup strategy!
The script creates a <AW_NAME__ACTDATE>.Z file and is to found in a
directory we mounted with NFS to our intranet.
Every night after finishing the save all script we collect the data from
all AWs and copy them to our office server.

But perhaps there's one more item you have to consider about.
The save all of the CP-Data and user Data is not enough to set up a new
AW/AP after crash - you usually have to set up the system once again...
To make this work sufferably we create a dd copy from the AWs harddrive
after every system administration and put it to a safe place. In case of
crash we only insert the last dd copy in a "new" workstation, copy the
newest data, saved by Marcellos script, to the machine and enjoy our
lives;-) I think it's a +/- 3 hours work.

Mit freundlichem Gruß / Best Regards

Thanks Marcel for this reply. Actually we have not tried any other media
and we have not experienced any problem yet with floppies. Moreover we
are storing the backup floppies on a secure cabinet. However, after this
excellent input we have to give this issue another thought.

One more time great thanks for this excellent help.

This sounds really strange to me. I never had more problems with =
external
data storage media than with floppies. I consider them to be the =
unsafest
medium available. Secondly the amount of available space on one floppy =
is
far too small.

I'd use one of the hundreds of save_all scripts crawling around (of =
course I
prefer my own ;-) and then transfer the saved and compressed tar =
archives to
some central server and burn CDs from there after a fixed strategy. =
Example:
Check each CP and GW once a day if the checkpoint file is newer than =
the
last backup. If yes then run a save_all for this CP, tar it to one file
=
and
copress it using the UNIX compress command. Then keep the last 20 =
backups
(delete the 21st) and maintain all backups in a common directory =
structure
on all AWs like /opt/<customer>/backups/save_alls/<CPLBUG>/. Perform =
this
for all CPs hosted by the local AW. Perform this on all hosts in the =
system.
Don't forget to add all sequence include files to the backup, because =
if
they are missing, you won't be able to compile your sequence blocks =
after a
desaster recovery. It's also a good idea to save the CP Workfiles with =
the
associated SaveAlls, there have been situations where an old workfile
allowed to access the CP in ICC which was impossible with a corrupt =
workfile
so at least you could enter and initialize and load all from the last
backup.

After all Backups have been performed and everything has been stored,
packed, and done transfer everything to some central machine (via 2nd
Ethernet to keep the Nodebus free from this traffic) and burn CDs from =
there
on a weekly basis.

That's what I recommend to my customers and it saved my A**** several =
times
already. ;-)

However you'll going to make it, I'd recommend NOT to rely on floppies =
only.

Best regards -
