Good Morning;
Yes, this has been done. We installed an HP 9200 series
CDRW for a customer, and another at our own office. The
one is an AW51E, and the other an AW51B.
We used the publicly licensed software 'cdrecord', available
for download from the internet, and added scripts to build
CDs on demand, and on a 'cron' based script, run monthly, to
backup various data from the AW.
We can not use this particular drive to do the 'normal'
functions a CD does with the Solaris 2.5.1 OS that IA runs
because it does not support the 512 byte sector or transfer
size that Solaris requires. It does work fine thru the
cdrecord software, however, and the CDs that it writes are
compatible with other drives and systems if you get all the
options right.
That said, cdrecord comes with myriad options. It requires
some education to get exactly what you want. Further,
cdrecord has no GUI; it is command line only. Hence, the
scripts we built around it are nessessary to make it usefull
for our purposes.
In regards to other systems, we have put SCSI and IDE CDRWs
on NT and W2000, Intel systems as well. For 'on-demand'
creation of CDs, a number of software sets exist. For
automatic creation, two software sets come to mind; the
same 'cdrecord' I think comes in a Win32 flavor. There is
also a German commercial product called Nero. It
is quite easy to use right out of the box. It has a GUI,
but it also has a scripting capability. I know of no
software other than cdrecord and Nero which has this.
I have personal experience with the HP 9200 and the HP 820e
drives in use on Win32 platforms as SCSI drives, including use
on an AW70. Further, for Win32, there is a wide range of
IDE units available.
Unfortunately, these two SCSI drives are no longer in
production. However, they are built to operate to a
standard related to CDRW on SCSI-II (the name of the
standard escapes me). Most SCSI drives built today
seem to be standardized, so should work with packages
like these. Providers of both packages keep lists of
CDR and CDRW drives their software is known to work with.
These can be downloaded as well.

The latest version I have is 30-March-1999. Its all
