Tim, It has been a long time since I have restored a unix box, but I can think of a couple of things about the root. = The /etc/vfstab file is very critical to booting the box. This is the file that mounts different partitions. i.e. if you have a 70GB raid drive and want to use the extra data partition you have to edit /etc/vfstab and add a mount point for it. I have seen this file get corrupted and the only time you know it is if you reboot the box. You could do an interactive restore of this file to a different location and compare the file. = HOST file is /etc/hosts which is linked to /etc/inet/hosts. There can be any number of important files in the root, I would not trust the drive without restoring root. However, to get it to restore and reboot without the "cannot mount root" error I had to restore everything EXCEPT the root directory. I did this by REM'ing out all lines in the QF #991274D restore script that had to do with root directory file system creation and restore. = Any ideas from this point? What consequences will I have by not restoring root from the old system? I know that the HOST file is located in the root somewhere. Is there anything else that is critical? Any ideas as to what is being restored when I do restore the root directory that is causing my problems? = Thanks for all of your help on this! = Best Regards, = Tim Rarden Process Control Engineer SMART PAPERS HOLDINGS LLC "You're Brilliant.
