Actually, the other major DCS vendor I dealt with some years ago did 
exactly that.  They reasoned that it was harder to support the older 
stuff, so they charged you more.  Whether that was true, or just a ploy to 
get us to upgrade often, I don't know, but it could be used as additional 
justification.


In the past, I believe our service agreements have been charged as a 
percentage of list price for installed hardware.  If the prices are going 
down for new stuff, as ARC says, and holding steady for stuff that's no 
longer for sale, then in effect, Foxboro is doing this, too :-)
