Re: [foxboro] Replacing Foxboro LCD Monitors

Mark,
We have replaced one of the Foxboro LCD screens in a Command Console
with an after-market NEC 2010X 20" LCD flat screen. It comes with AMBIX
technology that auto synchs to every analog or digital video card output
whether in a Sun or MS box. It can accept either the 15 pin D-sub input
usually found on analog video cards or the newer DVI connectors found on
digital video cards. We found out that the original Foxboro LCD Monitor
in the command console was actually an early NEC 2010 screen, repackaged in
a mounting structure that made it fit on the Command Console. Although we
really liked the looks of the dual screen command consoles we soon found out
that the top screen was too high and far away from the technician for easy
veiwing. Technicians, especially ones needing bifocal or gradient
correction, couldn't get their head back far enough to see the top screens
and constantly complained about them. There are limited provisions for
mounting adjustments but we couldn't overcome this ergonomic issue without
making our own bracket that brought the screens closer. That solution
consisted of a piece of flat iron that bolted across the command console
uprights with another piece of flat iron extending toward the front of the
console attached to it. The screen swivel of the 2010X was bolted to that.
It isn't a bad solution but it is a custom built one that may or may not
work with future LCD screen mounting brackets.
We decided that the best solution for us was to use the old Foxboro
LEXAN workstation bays which are more ergonomically correct. Instead of an
in bay CRT we used the NEC2010X to lay on the front of the sloped lexan
plate of the older style bays. We still have CRT's on the top mount
platform but now that the price of LCD's has dramatically reduced we may use
the NEC2010X's for the top screen also when the after-market CRT's fail.
The NEC2010X comes standard with a great base that is one of the most
flexible/adjustable I've ever seen on an LCD screen. We hated to have to
remove them so we could lay the LCD on the front panel of the Foxboro bays.
The swivel, tilt, portrait or landscape, and height adjustability are
superb.
If you only intend to use a single screen on the lower half of the
Command console I think they are adequate but I wouldn't reccommend them in
an over under arrangement. A custom bracket as I mentioned above would be
the best for a retrofit from the Foxboro standard LCD which is designed to
mount directly between the two uprights of the console. The uprights
provide a power and video cable path back down through the bay to your power
source and PC video port. It sounds like you already have installed the
command consoles and are just looking for replacement screens. If you
haven't purchased the consoles yet and are looking for dual screen bays I
would reconsider the use of Command Consoles.

Subject: [foxboro] Replacing Foxboro LCD Monitors

Has anybody replaced an existing Foxboro LCD monitor with an after-market
model?

The monitor would need to fit in a Command Center system, so mounting is an
issue. What changes are needed to the after-market model to allow
installation?

The workstations are WP70s.

Thanks!
