We use all dedicated DMs to better control access to the Foxboro system. =
Recently we had to switch from static IP addresses to DHCP so that our =
desktops could obtain other information from the DHCP server. The =
solution we used was to configure the DHCP server to reserve a range of =
IP addresses and assign them to the PCs by MAC address. With this =
process the DHCP server will give each listed PC (identified by MAC =
address) the same IP address each time it boots onto the network. Since =
the IP address doesn't change the Foxboro side is simple. We use a =
version of remote_dm that requires the alias or IP address as the first =
parameter. This can be run from the command line or from an Exceed =
Xstart icon. =20

REM_STATION=3D3Dw2brafox12:0

Strange name that is also problably not known to the 51 box in =
/etc/hosts.
What the DM needs is a machine, a server and a screen to send the =
DM/Foxview
to. (machine:server.screen i.e. NTBOX:0.0)
The problem with Dynamic IP's is that a dedicated DM won't work because =
the
Foxboro 51 box is not DHCP aware What you seem to be doing is make the =
DM to
a machine name but the 51 may not know how to translate this to an IP
address.
You could try to determine the IP address on the XP box (CMD box and run
"ipconfig") and enter that ip address in the go_dm script to see if that
solves the problem.
If that works the problem is that the DM finds an empty station and
therefore decides the DM should go to a local head. ( the DISPLAY =
variable
will be set to "emptyvariable:0.0" which is the same as ":0.0" and that
could very well be a local head on the 51)

What you actually need is then a way to make the 51 Box know your =
machine
name. We are working to make dynamic IP addressing work through DHCP and
DNS. We believe this is working here and there already. I have heard of =
at
least one Foxboro customer in Belgium.

Hope this helps

This worked fine before I moved the Foxboro to a new subnet=3D20
and started using a dynamic IP on my XP machine.=3D20
So I'm feel sure my dmcfg file is still ok. I removed my=3D20
machine name and ip from the Foxboro. Is there anything in the=3D20
remote_dm script I need to change or add. I tried
REM_STATION=3D3Dw2brafox12:0
And that didn't seem to help. Everthing else works fine as for as
shelltool and telnet and ftp.

Thanks,
CT Currie

The one thing that I can think of is that the DM/FoxView you are trying
=3D3D
to
start is dedicated to a "local" screen.
The file /usr/fox/customer/hi/dmcfg should give you the information on =
=3D
=3D3D
that:

NAME 1AWB11 1DM110 - foxDefault
NAME 1AWB11 1DM111 .- foxDefault

The example shows the second DM (1DM111) dedicated to any local head. =
=3D
=3D3D
Could
also be .0 or .1 for that matter. If you want the DM to be NON =3D3D
DEDICATED,
remove the dot (.) save the file and reboot the host. (Sorry about that
=3D3D
last
one)

Another thing is to make sure you use "rlogin" as the Start Method for =
=3D
=3D3D
the
X-session.

Hope this helps

I tried the remote_dm script and it almost works for me. Problem is =
=3D3D
ever =3D3D3D
time I use Hummingbird to run the script the remote display pops up on =
=3D
=3D3D
=3D3D3D
the AW instead of my XP machine. The AW is a 51C box. Any ideas???
