Re: [foxboro] Pure Terephtalic Acid

I found this on google:

PET for beverage bottles is manufactured by oxidizing paraxylene to make
terephthalic acid(TPA). TPA is then purified either by reaction with
methanol to form dimethyl ester of terephthalic acid (DMT) or by
further oxidation to form purified terephthalic acid (PTA). PET is a
condensation polymer produced from DMT or PTA using a continous
melt-phase polymerization process, followed by a solid-state
polymerization process that yields a highly crystalline pellet and
provides the final molecular weight and final intrinsic viscosity. The
solid-state process also yields a polymer with a low acetaldehyde
content. During processing of bottles, PET is biaxially stretched
causing orientantion of the polymer chain. Orientated crystalline PET
has good strength, toughness, clarity, and resists weak acids, bases,
and many solvents.
