Re: [foxboro] P91 and remote clients

#1 Any client connection to the Terminal Services requires a TS-CAL. The
Remote Desktop Web Connection (used when connecting through the Internet
Explorer) is actually an ActiveX control that ends up communicating with
the Terminal Server and acquiring a TS-CAL.

A good overview of the TS architecture and interactions can be found on
MS TechNet at "How Terminal Service Work"

#2 All cases listed by you need one CAL + one TS Device CAL

See details at Terminal Server Licensing Requirements
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/howtobuy/licensing/ts2003.msp
x

Excerpt follows:

"Windows Server License

The Windows Server 2003 R2 licensing model requires a server license for
each copy of the server software installed. Terminal Services
functionality is included in the Windows Server license.

Windows Server Client Access License

In addition to a server license, a Windows Server Client Access License
(CAL) is required. If you wish to conduct a Windows session, an
incremental Terminal Server Client Access License (TS CAL) is required
as well. A Windows session is defined as a session during which the
server software hosts a graphical user interface on a device. For
Windows sessions, a TS CAL is required for each user or device.

Device-based versus User-based Terminal Server CALs

Two types of Terminal Server Client Access Licenses are available: TS
Device CAL or TS User CAL.

* A TS Device CAL permits one device (used by any user) to conduct
Windows Sessions on any of your servers.
* A TS User CAL permits one user (using any device) to conduct Windows
Sessions on any of your servers.

You may choose to use a combination of TS Device CALs and TS User CALs
simultaneously with the server software."

Alex or Russ,

I'm very interested in hearing a definitive answer to Ron's question.
He said:

Case #1: My understanding was that the remote Foxview using Internet
Explorer was connecting using TCP port 8080 and Internet Information
Services (IIS).(Web Server) This type of connection didn't need the
TS-Cal.

Is that a true statement?

He also said:

Case #2: When you connect with remote desktop connection (Formerly
Terminal Service Client on the NT system) you do require TS-Cals for
each machine(per device) or each user (per-seat).

From my reading of the excerpts included below from the article Russ
forwarded I came to this understanding. It is confusing so I could be
wrong.

One user on one client machine would require two licenses:
1 Device CAL
1 User CAL

Two users on one client machine would require 3 licenses:
1 Device CAL
2 User CAL's

Ten users on one client machine would require 11 licenses:
1 Device CAL
10 User CAL's

Does everyone agree with that assumption?
