Re: [foxboro] OPC again...

Joe,

At least two end-user companies (at several sites) have build APC
applications over the I/A Series using OPC. However, to do it properly,
the application needs to use the I/A Series Supervisory Setpoint Control
mechanism. The use off this mechanism means that if communications fail,
the system will fallback to appropriate regulatory control.

The OPC specification does not provide a standard handshaking mechanism
between an OPC based APC application and a DCS. Therefore, direct
support of our SSC mechanism is not provided by an OPC DA Server.

However, there is a package sold by the Global Project Operations
Advanced Applications Development group that makes this possible. Your
account representative can contact me for pricing. I'll send you the
manual off-list.

It is possible to implement such an interface without this package, but
it involves building CALC blocks (two per loop) or Sequence Blocks
(various implementations) that add significantly to the costs of
maintenance and installation.

Additionally, Connoisseur and DMCplus (using our DMCplus Bridge) do not
need this package. They are designed to implement the handshake.

Hope this helps. =

Subject: [foxboro] OPC again...

Folks,
I have always wondered if OPC was not just intended to collect data, or
is
it also considered a viable communication link for control? I now have
a
vendor that wants to perform advanced process control from their
PC-based
software to specific control loops on the Foxboro System via OPC? Read
measurement values, execute advanced control algorithms, write control
outputs, etc.
Is OPC considered secure, reliable, repeatable, etc. enough for control?

Your thoughts/recommendations?
