Indeed this is a problem.

The official way to start the OPC I/O Gate at boot time (From the OPC
service manual page 21):

2.2.7Start OPC I/O Gate at system startup.
The OPC I/O Gate can be started from the Start menu found in Windows but
it would be better if it would be started in due time after the AW70 is
fully on-line. A Windows "cmd" script is provided for this purpose. For
the procedure to enable automatic startup for the OPC I/O Gate:

An item must be added to the startup group. Follow these steps to make
the modification:
1.Select the Start menu button in the Windows Task Bar. Then select
Settings and Taskbar=20
2.In the Taskbar Properties dialog box, select Start Menu Programs then
select the Add button.=20
3.In the Create Shortcut dialog box, select the Browse button.=20
4.In the Browse dialog box, locate the
"D:\opt\diw\IOGates\OPC\Bin\OPCStart.cmd" file. Select the OPCstart.cmd
file so that its name appears in the File name: field then select the
Open button.=20
5.Select Next in the Create Shortcut dialog box.=20
6.In the Select Program Folder dialog box, locate and select the Startup
folder.=20
7.Select Next then Finish.

After this the OPC I/O Gate will be started automatically when the AW70
is running.
(This will not work when the NT shell was disabled at boot time).

If you have disabled the shell then [your feedback goes here...:-)_

Ron,

We have 2 AW70 V7.1 OPC Client I/O gate stations. Working with Foxboro
it
appears that there is not a way to have the I/O Gate software
automatically
start on boot up and yet still have a way to be able to show a status
dialog screen for the tags like what shows when the software is manually
started. Thus, it appears we have to live starting the software
manually
every time after a reboot. Is there anything can that can be done about
this issue? It would also be nice to be able to have the software run
as a
service.

I know Foxboro wants to put their efforts into their new OPC Client
module
that connects to the new CP270s, but that is not going to do any thing
to
help me and the other Foxboro clients that have spent a lot of money the
last couple of years to purchase and install these stations. We can't
afford to replace them for a number of years.

Thanks Tom,

And I don't even deserve all the credits.
Happy to find the manual is available on Cassandra now. We will keep you
updated.

BTW: The OPC I/O gate was the main "driver" to documents our OPC stuff
to begin with. We had some problems to get running and had some great
help form our US TAC group. Once you get your fingers behind the I/O
Gate on a 70 Series AW, it's quite easy to get working most of the time.
I can only recall one occasion we had to give it up. That was more
related to the I/O gate running on XP. After we installed it on an NT
Box all went smooth. The "other side" was an OPC server on Windows NT as
well which may have been a problem in this particular case.

Ron,
Duc must have heard me talking, (over the dividers), about
our
impending intention to implement a Foxboro FDSI OPC Driver for an
FBM232. That spurred him to post the document that you have written. I
have perused the document and am quite impressed with your excellent
presentation of details. We struggled getting an OPC IO gate
implementation up and running and communicating with remote servers and
then decided to wait for the FBM232, ZCP270's, and Version 8.1 software
that will be deployed on our new MESH network ~Oct. 2006. =3D3D20
I am interested to hear from any users that may already be
pulling OPC data from servers using the Foxboro FDSI OPC Driver for
FBM232 and/or FBM233 to an FCP/ZCP270. How critical is your data and
have you been satisfied with the response and robustness of the
interface? Are there additional gotchas/hurdles that you had to overcome
to make it work that aren't listed in Ron Deen's manual? Thanks in
advance for any feedback!

List,

Ron Deen sent me a document on OPC a while back and offered it to the
Cassandra Project. I've sat on it long enough. It seems to be a good
time to put in on the Cassandra Project Web site for all to peruse. It
is a hefty document at over 100 pages and 2.2 MB.
