We use OMI with DM/Solaris Alex, mostly using the SENDCONF command, but
also SENDMSG. The initial reason we wanted to move away from OMI was (way
back in the day) because an AW could only support a limited number of
message files (13 comes to mind, it was small anyway) and we ended up with
more equipment units than available message files. Our solution is a
wholly home grown message handler, based in the main on some clever
sequence block code (IND/DEP blocks with HLBL) which we developed some
years back with lots of help from our local Foxboro support folks (thanks
Baljit, you know who you are!!).
The thing that breaks my OMI is the use of text (part of the same DM
graphic file that contains the OMI message group) which changes content
based on the triggered read string variable. I.E. the OMI was working fine
on my displays until one day I added text to show what batch (IA Batch)
was running in a vessel, (just the batch name and phase being executed
popped into text strings), after that I get times when OMI messages just
dont appear in the message group.
Clear as mud, I know, :-)

Gabriel.

Re: [foxboro] OMI on DM
Gabriel,
Do you really use OMI (SENDMSG to OMI Server to DM/FV)?
From your message, it appears that you use the DM/FV triggered read of a
string variable which is independent of OMI. This functionality is
supported under Windows.
Just curious, as mentioned I've never used OMI.
Do you use DM or FV? Solaris or Windows.
What is your replacement strategy?

Alex Johnson

I use OMI a lot and have a similar problem where I have text content
driven by .MSGNO and .SN000X parameters, but my problem is sort of the
inverse of yours in that sometimes the content of the OMI message is not
visible, but may become visible if the display is refreshed/updated, -
sometimes, it doesent happen to all displays all the time. Its frustrating
to the operations personnell to say the least. We have a plan to move away
from the OMI driven message handling and move to a messsage handling
system we built ourselves.
Regards,
Gabriel.
