Re: [foxboro] (No X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft Exchange V6.5

Ron,
When you buy a "system" from Foxboro you get 100% support from Foxboro to get
the thing working and keep it working 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. When
one step in 3,000,000 steps goes wrong and the thing stops working, Foxboro
will help you get the thing going again.

When you buy part of a system from Foxboro and take on full responsibility for
another part of the system yourself, where do you go for help? There is a risk.
You might be able to load AW70 software on EL-CHEAPO PC and maybe it works 99%
of the time. How much is that 1% worth to you? Same as you might be able to
load AW51 software on OLD_SUNNY risc computers and maybe it performs 98% of the
tasks that you want it to perform

These systems are highly complex and although a small change may seem trivial,
it can prevent the thing from working.

I guess the real question is are you in the system business or are you in the
process business. If you are in the process business you need to buy systems
from specialists who can keep your process running so that you make money.

Last week I asked about the Enterasys switches and a lot of good
feedback. I spoke with sales at both companies and get different
answers? Enterasys says that the switches are the same ones they sell
(including firmware) and Foxboro says that their switches are POTS
(Proprietary Off The Shelf) switches that Enterasys cant sell us. If so
what firmware revision are the Foxboro switches? (A2 series 24 port
fiber switches) Does anyone have these in use (Foxboro's) and have there
been any problems? I guess the price markup makes us wonder if its
really worth the investment.

At my current level of understanding I wouldn't feel comfortable using
other switches and I know if I did and had problems it would be
difficult to get knowledgeable help from Foxboro. (Tom V)

This is a very good point and even with the Enterasys switches (From
Enterasys) I was told they come with a lifetime warranty and
manufacturer technical support so if there was a problem, I would be
leaning to calling them first anyway! After all, They are the ones who
make them.
