I can tell you our local experience, which is similar to your option 4. =
We are running both PI and DMC, in two separate AW51D's, only for the =
sake of cpu load. Both machines have 128MB.=20

The one runnning DMC has 5 controllers running (4 of them quite big), =
AspenIQ for online predictions (11 predictions) and VSCalc for auxiliary =
calculations (2 fortran routines). On top of that DMCBridge for =
Operator/Engineering interfase. So, it's quite loaded: the only problem =
so far (its been running 24x7 for the past 5 years) is that every 3 to 4 =
months we need to reboot it because it runs out of memory. I've trying =
to buy more memory to fix it, but nobody seems to care a lot about it =
since its only 20-30 minutes offline every now and then. This machine =
also runs legacy Historian for DMC points.

The one running PI only stops for periodic backup. We have PI running =
likewise on an AW51A, with 32MB RAM, on another node, and it is also =
"unstoppable". The first one reads +5000 points and the second, +3000. =
Only need to be careful to run different instances of the PI-API, in =
different phases to avoid overloading node traffic. PI runs a local =
buffer in case you loose connection to the corporarte network. Depending =
your hard disk space you can work for days without network and recover =
everything when you have it back (we had this problem for about 1 week =
and recovered everything).

That been said, I would recommend a similar setup for any new =
installation.
