Re: [foxboro] Multimedia Alarm or play sounds in Unix V6.2 AW51D

A few notes on audiotool:

We do use audiotool to provide some much more flexible alarming capabilities to
workstations. Since our workstations are mounted in cabinets away from the
operators we have been using speaker sets attached to the 'line out' jack on
the workstation. That gives us some range and amplification. If you are going
to use speakers you need to read on.

Alex is right, audiotool can be easily run from a script and given any sound to
play. What he didn't mention is the corresponding multimedia tool
'audiocontrol' can NOT be run from a script and is only interactive. The
operating defaults can easily be set up by running the interactive audiocontrol
and changing them. The problem is, depending on the station you are running it
on, the changes you make may only be valid UNTIL THE STATION IS BOOTED, when
they return to the old default.

The 'B' box reverts to speaker only and mid range volume when it is rebooted.
To set 'line out' on, you MUST run audiocontrol.

The 'D' box retains all of its settings on reboot.

I have not tested the 'E' box, nor do I know what any future box may do.

Hope this saves someone some trouble.

You want audiotool.

It is in /usr/openwin/bin.

It can be run from a script or interactively.

        Dear fellows:

In previous version of Unix IA we found a small Solaris command
called
"play" that we used to play alarm messages based on process
conditions.
We can not find this utility anymore.

We will really appreciate your inputs about multimedia alarms in
IA-Unix
        V6.2.

Thanks in advance and best regards,
