Re: [foxboro] MS service packs

"On a related topic, with Microsoft having issued thirty-three "HotFixes"
so far this year, how are members of the Cassandra List coping with IA
running on Microsoft OS."

Our new (NT4.0) AW70, as with my relatively soft Solaris 2.5.1 51 boxes,
talk to the outside (network) world only through a firewall -- which runs
neither of those OSes. We also loaded Mozilla on the AW70 to look at
documentation, in order to avoid IE bugs -- and because Mozilla IMHO is a
better browser. While I'd like to attack the security on the box itself
(security in layers and all that), my 51 experience has shown that any
comprehensive efforts to improve local security tend to break the Foxboro
applications.

As for non-security issues, we've tried to avoid loading software on the 70
that we don't need, which not only avoids compatibility issues, but also
improves its stability (I've found Windoze' stability to be inversely
proportional to the amount of software loaded and to the amount of use it
gets from the console).
