Sean Redmond has chimed in about different methods of capturing data on a
time scheduled basis, and they're all good points.

My advice is this: unless you really, really want the data at the very end
of a month, it's much easier programmatically to grab the data the start
of the following month. For most instances, data at 12:01 AM are not that
much different that those grabbed at 11:59 PM, and they're much easier to
schedule through crontab or scheduler or whatever mechanism you use.

You don't have the same difficulty with week or year because determining
and scheduling for the end of a week or a year is trivial.
