Re: [foxboro] Ghost

Robert
It depends what opsys is running on the machine you are ghosting.
If the machine you are ghosting is running WIN NT 4,
then it will be difficult to successfully boot a ghost image on dissimilar
hardware.
Assuming you can access the hard disk, you would have to know
how to manually repair the hw/sw discrepancies created by the dissimilar
hardware.

If however you are ghosting a WIN XP machine, then you can use
XP's self-repair capability to fix any issues related to
dissimilar hardware on the restored machine.
XP's self-repair capability is surprisingly clever.

I tried it with an AW70 XP.

Surprisingly, after the repair, the machine rebooted and I/A came up.
I have done this successfully on 3 separate occasions,
so I know it is not luck.

I have not tried this with a WIN2K machine.
I am not sure if the WIN2K self-repair capability is as good as XP's

Has anyone had experience with using Ghost on dissimilar computers?
I have a server I want to duplicate onto a dissimilar machine and have never
used Ghost.
