Re: [foxboro] "G" boxes as WP's ?

I enjoyed Jeremy's narrative of the subject of 51G machines as WPs. (I
have to get out more, because I am not familiar with the characters.)
If there is any conspiracy, I would think it is more simple than
explained.

Why would a customer be given the option of buying a WP software
license when they could be asked to buy a AW license?

However, I don't think there is normal Invensys bottom-line thinking at
work here. The 51 G is way overkill for simple operator visualization.
It is overkill just about everything in the world of process control.
This machine is intended for the Steven Spielberg's of the world and
other high-end CAD/simulation work where CPU speed, memory, extreme
graphics performance and expansion are important. =20

(Are Sunblade 2000's still shipping as G boxes?) The desire for
IPS/Foxboro to have a dual workstation approach with the high-end model
including SCSI disks forces the Sun offering to be the Sunblade
2000/2500 which keeps things high on the price/performance curve. The
Sunblade 1500 would probably be appropriate for the high-end I/A Unix
workstation even though it uses IDE drives. The Sunblade 150 is
appropriate as the low-end machine (F).

The only potential deception going on is the FUD (Fear, Uncertainty,
Doubt) being cast over the issue of F box connectivity to I/A v8.x mesh
networks. Shame on a salesperson for directing a purchase for something
more/more expensive than necessary without having a factual basis to the
explanation. A good salesperson would make sure current customer
requirements are meet and if a suspected issue causes a future hardware
incompatibility, would structure a cost-effective upgrade to resolve the
issue if it proves to be true.

Unfortunately FUD, since Invensys is aligning with the 800 pound FUD
master, goes with the territory now days.

How about this scenario:

"Hey guys, did you realize that we forgot to include the ability to make
'G' boxes work as WP's?", Franklin mentioned in the 9am staff meeting.

Sheridan replied, "Hmmm, well no matter, anybody that bought a 'G' box
w/ an AW license would never want to make it a WP, and they wouldn't
have the license for the WP anyway."

"Of course you realize that the 'G' boxes have never been tested as WPs,
don't you", Ivanova snidely added.

"Now hold on a minute," Garibaldi broke in, "are you trying to say that
a box that CAN be an AW, wouldn't work as WP. That's insane. Is there a
conspiracy here???".

"I didn't say that it wouldn't work, all I said was it hadn't been
TESTED", she replied cooly.

"Oh, don't worry about it. They can just buy another box if they want a
WP, that's the easiest solution. They are used to it, remember the
APs?", Londo helpfully said to ease the mounting tension.

At that moment Kosh walks into the room and cryptically intoned, "You do
not understand. But you will."

Stares of amazement fill the room, but then Mr. Morden breaks out the
dounts and everyone snaps out of their trance and all mumble ,"Stupid
Vorlons".

Kosh leaves the room and the meeting proceeds to other topics, but as he
glides down the hall they hear him say, "The avalanche has already
started. It is too late for the pebbles to vote......."

That's all speculation of course ;)
