I've used both ProSoft modules and "Postbox PLCs" before for
communicating between systems - including comms between two Foxboro
DCS systems.
I've found the ProSoft modules to be very efficient and typically
straightforward to set up. Support has been very good.
I've also used Kingfisher RTUs as Postbox PLCs for comms between
systems - the Kingfishers can be had with lots of comms ports that can
be configured for modbus or a variety of other protocols. Although I
haven't used them this way, they can be configured with a 2nd
processor for failover, and there are several options for failover
conditions.
Some of the advantages of using a PLC or RTU in between systems is
that you can implement your watchdog and failure logic on the unit
itself. If a single connection is not enough bandwidth, it's
straightforward to set these up with multiple ports in each direction.
Multiple systems can be integrated through a single unit.

Kevin FitzGerrell
