Re: [foxboro] FSIM as a replacement for the AW70X

Hi Jason,

We went real hardware route also, with a simplex FCP270 (no switches are
actually required), and an AW70 for a development machine. If you don't
want I/O on your development system, the licensing costs are greatly
reduced. This has worked really well for us. You have to roll your own
simulation compounds/blocks, and loop your I/O blocks back around to
them, but that isn't a big deal.

You don't get all the bells and whistles of the FSIM, but you don't get
the headaches that go with it either. Or the price tag. For any IPS
folks monitoring the list please note that I have heroically avoided any
snide comparisons to the Gross National Product of a small third world
country or the recent U.S. financial bailout package - that wouldn't be
nice. ;)

And yes, I agree that the demise of the AW70x was a huge step backwards.
Foxboro/Invensys/IPS has decided to push FSIM as their off-line
development system of choice in the post-8.x world. Personally, I'll
pass. Technically, it's great, but the price tag is the show stopper
for us in this application. As a training simulator, it has more use.

As usual, the standard Alex disclaimer applies regarding free advice.

Subject: [foxboro] FSIM as a replacement for the AW70X

Does any end user have experience in using FSIM as a replacement for a
AW70X? Given the pricing I have received for FSIM, although it may be a
more functional replacement, it doesn't seem like a practical one. It
seems like it would be cheaper to purchase a AW, switches and a CP270
and have the spares to boot. I could probably also buy a car to drive it
around. Perhaps I didn't use the right verbiage when I requested the
quote?
I had an opportunity to use FSIM a few years back. I liked it, but it is
a lot more than what I currently need for simple off-line training and
development (and priced accordingly).

It seems like the loss of the AW70x at v 8.x is a big one to the user
community, another backwards step?

Let me know if someone has had a different experience.
