Dear Shaun,

thank you for that description.
We made the same experience using a FBM231.

procedure:
- Connect physically a FBM231 with an external device (in our case a
PLC)
- Configure the PLC and the DCS
- Create the blocks and tags in both system
- Create additional blocks (sinks) which use the "PLC communication
blocks" as a source (example: build AIN and connect them to the DCI
blocks)
- Be sure that the values in the PLC don't change that much

result:
-> less or nearly no CPU load in the FCP270

-------

procedure:
- arrange that the values in the PLC change every cycle

result:
-> increased CPU load in the FCP270

-------

procedure:
- delete some tags in your PLC so that you run into communication errors

result:
-> error messages from the FBM231

My conclusion is that you can't really evaluate a system without a
living I/O.

Regards,
Andreas
