Robert,

The best thing you can do is to go to www.win-tech.com and download a copy
of ModScan32 software. They have a master and a slave version of the
software. Amongst other things, ModScan lets you look at the raw data from
the slave or master device and that's really useful when the device supports
"Modbus" (but you have to read all three registers of a data point or it
sends an exception response and it also has a special way of indicating a
negative number).

I usually start by getting comms going to the slave, that way I have a known
good cable, Baud rate, stop bits, etc... _and_ I know what registers are
supported and how they are addressed - invaluable. Once you know this stuff
then the Foxboro end is usually straight forward. Be careful of some gear
that is set up so that its comms could time out, they usually stop
responding unless you write the special string of numbers to some very
specific addresses.
