Re: [foxboro] Exceed

We have tried EOD in the Office (Netherlands) and there were some issues we
were unable to solve.
Despite excellent support from Hummingbird over here, we could not get a
decent workaround for the Foxboro fonts and we could not get the blinking
colors working satisfactoy. Performance would go down the drain when the
blink task was running.
If any of you can come up with a solution for these issues, I'm interested.
I'm working on the Xterm document (slowly) to address the questions
regarding Windows XP and eXceed 8 and 9. But since EOD appears to do well
over telephone lines (not with blinking colors that is) it makes for a good
candidate for remote support.

We have seen better results with VNC (we are testin 3.3.6 at this moment)
and SUNRay version 2.0 thin clients.

Looking for feedback (you can opt for an off-list response if you like)

Thanks and best regards

To get more information on PPGs utilization of the product read on.

We have 2 WP51D boxes running 6.3 with DM and 2 WP51F boxes running 7.X with
DM. Each of the 7.X WPs have 14 additional DMs available,=20 and the 2 D
boxes have 5 each. There is no Hummingbird software installed on these
boxes, only scripts. We have a single Windows 2K server with the Exceed on
Demand Server running on it with 45 licenses and 4 profiles, ( 1/profile for
each WP ) Depending on the appropriate windows group / security the users
can access these Profiles/WPs. We purchased the licenses such that the
client is free to install and the EOD server manages the licenses for us.
Upon starting a client you receive on your PC an Openwindows desktop ( Blue
Screen ), you then right click and choose I/A Display Manager. As an added
benefit the EOD is extremely thin and doesn't use very much bandwidth at
all. There are also a few other nice features such as a timeout from user
inactivity, better use of colors, ease of making the blink task work and it
can also run directly on the Foxboro WP/Solaris or on Linux. We went with
Windows 2000 due to our lack of Linux base. With a base user population of
over 200 the benefits of the license management makes the swap worthwhile.
The cost of ownership is also lower, Instead of having to purchase 200
copies of Exceed for Windows we purchased the 45 licenses of EOD. Since we
only have around 40 DMs available that's all we need.

We are also using this as a replacement for Go Global. An additional EOD
server was installed directly on another WP which has a net=20 blazer
router/modem and we get full function DMs from it via a 56k modem at an
impressive speed. This utilization is only for the Process Control staff and
when they connect here we have IP restriction, CTS authentication and
tracking. Thanks, Dwayne Landry PPG Industries Inc. Lake Charles, LA. 70601

Is anyone aware of Hummingbird's Exceed on Demand product? It provides =
you with a server with license management for as many exported displays as =
you care to license. It also handles the bottleneck of having more Exceed =
users than DM licenses quite well. PPG Lake Charles installed this produce
shortly after my retirement but I have visited and see that they are = very
satisfied with it.
