Stan,
I feel your pain because we had to figure out how to accomplish the
same thing when we decided to use Dual-Headed PC's as operator workstations
in our central control room. Each operating technician seat consists of one
over-under dual-headed WP51D connected to our site PC LAN via 2nd ethernet,
and it serves remote DM's to two dual-headed PC's running Hummingbird. The
PC's are configured so that they automatically call up a DM on each display
head whenever they are booted up and logged into with any valid network
username. We ran into 3 major issues surrounding this initiative and it was
like pulling hens teeth to find enough information to make it all work. The
issues are:
Installing the dual video card and configuring the display settings to work
the way we wanted them to display.
Installing Hummingbird Exceed on the PC's and configuring the countless
settings such as "font library", "Screen 0"/"Screen 1" and the XStart script
to work correctly and call the DM's to the appropriate screen.
Modifying the IA "/opt/ia/go_dm" script that launches the DM's to insure
that the DM's and DM launched applications such as VT-100, ICC, Display
Builder/Configurator... launch to the desired network host and screen. You
probably want to eliminate the default login of "ia" password "remote"
because of the security risks involved.
Since we had a variety of people that might need to setup one of
these PC's we created Power Point presentations for the Dual Video card, (in
our case a Matrox Millenium G400 MAX), and the Hummingbird software
installation, (in our case Ver 7.1), that would help guide them through the
process. I will forward copies of those presentations to anyone interested,
(offlist). There are some references to Dow Corning specific network
locations and you may have to make other modfications for your specific
needs but they should be able to help you understand the overall setup.
My co-worker, Duc Do, created a Dow Corning specific script called
start_dm that is used as input to the /opt/ia/go_dm script mentioned above
and he also had to modify go_dm to address the need to call up a DM on a
specific screen on the Hummingbird PC's. I will be glad to send text copies
of those files to anyone that needs them.
We have a total of 24 PC's running this arrangement in our Central
Control Room and 10 more being used by our engineering services. Once you
get over the initial learning curve, the dual headed PC workstations are a
godsend.

Subject: [foxboro] Dual headed Humingbird displays?
We have a system with displays in a remote control room that are on a PC
running Hummingbird. We use another X server for our remote display
managers,
but this system was engineered by Foxboro, and they were insistent about
using Hummingbird. So, my PC side group is unfamiliar with Hummingbird, and
between the 2 groups we have not been able to figure out how to make this
work.
Now, my operators want a second head on these machines. I thought this
would be simple, and I have already gotten dual headed video cards, and LCD
panels working with XP for these units. But I can't figure out how to get
Hummingbird to start up pointed to a specify head. I want to be able to
start up 2 separate display manager sessions, with one coming up full screen
on the primary display, and the other coming up on the secondary display.
Can anyone point me in the right direction on this?
