David,
I did some asking around and you have to be careful.
The book is correct, but incomplete. If you enable a disabled port, you
can disrupt communications. I've never done this, but I asked a
colleague and he tried it.=20
The results are as follows (the I is my colleague; not me):
I ran a simple test with the FBM224, 2 devices configured for Port1 &
Port2 respectively, one RAMP block and 1 IOUT block(per device/port)
TX/RX to the Modbus Device simulator at RS-232.
1. Changing the Port Configuration file to add a port and doing a "DB
Download" from SMDH "EQUIP CHG" has no effect on the devices or points.
But, changing the FBM224 ECB PORTEX parameter from 1 to 3 to add PORT 2,
and then clicking on "DONE" to have the changes accepted will put the
points OOS for 8-10 seconds.
This is expected because any changes within ICC and to the FBM ECB is
going to disrupt communications to the devices while the FBM is
reconfigured.
2. What I found though in testing, with no OOS disruption, is that a
device for PORT 2 can be added in ICC, a port file changed to include a
configured port 2 and then downloaded, that the FBM224 will start
communication and the points on PORT 2 will recover( nice for testing
but on a live process ??).
PORTEX is needed for the FBM "EQUIP CHG" ENABLE PORT X or DISABLE PORT X
and I would not recommend running without.
Through testing we have seen that for optimum performance not to
configure in the Port file or in PORTEX any ports that are not going to
be used.
I hope this is helpful.

Subject: [foxboro] Downloading FBM224
Hey everyone,
I have an FBM 224 that is has PORT -1 connected to a PLC via MODBUS=20
module, PORT -2 was never configured. Now I will need to configure=20
it. This will require me to download the FBM 224. What does this do=20
to the port that is running, and how long (if at all) are=20
communications interrupted?
The book states B0400FK - Rev B page 112
"The port configuration file for the ECB200 may be downloaded (DB=20
Download Equipment Change Action) at any time that the FBM is on=20
line. The FBM224 examines the file for configuration changes, and=20
apply the changes without disturbing those ports whose configuration=20
has not been changed,"
OK, can anyone VERIFY that?
Any other gotchas?
Regards,
David
