Waleed,
KVM extender is Keyboard Video Mouse extender. It is normally a pair of boxes,
one near the computer, and another near the monitor.
Most use Cat5 cable and can support extension of about 1000 feet. Fibre ones
are available, and typically support 500-1000 feet extension with multimode
fiber, and several miles on single mode fiber.
I've used the Raritan Cat5 ones. For fiber, I'd consider the Rose Crystalview
ones.
There are many of these that support Widows PCs, only a few support Sun
workstations. If you need a GCIO at the operator end, you'll need the KVM to
extend the serial port also. The better KVM extenders support connecting a
keyboard (and mouse) and video to the local side too - handy for doing
committals!
Foxboro does not specificly support KVM extenders, but because you're really
just using a longer keyboard and video cable (much longer) it really shouldn't
be an issue, as you're not affecting Foxboro functionality like you might be
using fiber+converters between the workstation and the DNBI/DNBT.
While I don't know specifically why Foxboro doesn't support fiber+converters
between the workstation and the DNBI/DNBT, I suspect it is as Corey said -
latency. Also, there is a limit to what different configurations Foxboro can do
reliability engineering and testing on.

Kevin,
I am sorry this is the first time to hear about KVM, what is this? Does it
support fiber optic cables as it is the only option we have in our case? Is
it supported by Foxboro?
Do you know why Foxboro does not support or recommend using media
converters? What type of converters did you use and can I get a sketch of it
if possible?
Regards,

We have one workstation istalled this way. It is definitely a configuration
not
supported by foxboro, but has worked without problems for us.
One other option to consider is to locate the workstation near the DNBI and
use
a kvm extender. High end KVM extenders are available for both PC and Sun
workstations. Most will support extensions to 1000 feet (although the
longer
the extension, the lower the video resolution supported). If you need to
extend
the serial port also to support a GCIO there are a few manufacturers who
make a
kvm+serial for Sun (and lots for windows).
