I've installed a couple KVM units. They work pretty well. Some that I've used
also let you have a local keyboard/monitor/mouse as well as a remote set so
that you can switch between one set and the other. This is great if you have
the control room controls plus a control station near the processing equipment
that's not necessarily manned all the time.
These KVMs usually run over CAT5 cable. If you are going to run CAT5, you might
as well use an X-term unless you aren't running 51s or 70s.

We have one workstation istalled this way. It is definitely a
configuration not
supported by foxboro, but has worked without problems for us.
One other option to consider is to locate the workstation near the DNBI
and use
a kvm extender. High end KVM extenders are available for both PC and
Sun
workstations. Most will support extensions to 1000 feet (although the
longer
the extension, the lower the video resolution supported). If you need
to extend
the serial port also to support a GCIO there are a few manufacturers
who make a
kvm+serial for Sun (and lots for windows).
