Re: [foxboro] DMCplus platform, migration path

Can't speak for everyone, but I'd love to hear about what you like about I/A
Series vs. Advant.

I think my question was misunderstood: on the I/A boxes (all 51D's
in =
        our
case) we are using DMCplus Bridge. We use GCS on the "office" WIN2K
=
        machines
for control engineers, normally for remote troubleshooting. My
problem =
        is
that I got GCS to work for the DMC's we have installed on ABB Advant
=
        system
but not for the I/A machines. As I see it now, it is just a problem
of
configuration, since everybody else seems to be using it with DMC's
=
        running
on I/A. That is why I was asking for advice on how to configure the
=
        GCS.
        Sorry for the misunderstanding.
By the way, and just for the record, I prefer I/A by far and for a
lot =
        of
        good reasons over ABB's Advant...

The DMCplus Bridge (Solaris only at this point) exists in part
because =
        GCS
        does not support Solaris.

We only have the Windows version of GCS and it is installed
on WIN98
systems. All of our I/A WPs are 50 series Unix boxes. I am
not
        sure if
ApsenTech makes a Unix version of GCS. If the Windows
version of
        GCS can be
installed on an NT system then there is no reason this would
not
        work on a
WP70. The control engineers are the only ones using GCS
from our
        Windows
                "business" workstation.

                Rory,

Have you been able to use GCS Opcon on I/A platform? If so,
can you
        give me
guidelines on how to do it. I thought it was not possible,
or at
        least that
was what I understood from the documentation...

ApsenTech sells a CIMIO for Foxboro I/A interface. It uses
the
        local FoxAPI
on the AW, therefore there is nothing additional to purchase
from
        Foxboro.
This would allow you to read and write tags between a CIMIO
device
        (DMCPlus,
IP21, RTO, etc...) and I/A. So, the controllers could be
built and
        run on
                the NT box.

Now the trick is the operator interface because you can no
longer
        use DMC
bridge graphics. There are a few options as I see it. 1.
Create
        the
graphics on I/A (maybe using reusable displays for similar
        controllers) 2.
Create the graphics with ApsenTech Process Explorer (will
require a
        PC for
each operator console) 3. Use AspenTech Web Viewer for
DMCPlus
        (requires a
separate NT box and PC for each operator console with MS IE)
4.
        Use
                ApsenTech legacy GCS OpCon (Yuck!)

I prefer option 1 if you have the time or option 3 if you
have the
                $$$$$$$$$!

We currently run DMCplus 1.11 on Foxboro I/A Ver 4.3 on
AW51
        series
                stations. While exploring the
upgrade strategies, we came to know that Foxboro has
migrated the
        DMC
                applications to Connoisseur ,
whereas Aspentech has their latest DMC plus 4.x

This latest DMC engine runs on Windows NT platform , which
could
        not be
                integrated to I/A Nodebus.
The possible workaround is to have an AW on the Nodebus to
Interact
        with
                the NT machine. The AW
on the Nodebus will have to act as the DMC bridge running
AOS and
        API,
which will also be hosting the
operator graphics on the WP's on the Nodebus. In this
setup, one
        needs to
                build the models on the
off-line NT machine and manually transfer the controller
files to
        the AW .

We are looking at a full-fledged solution using on-line
DMCplus
                Controllers .
                Your comments are welcome.
