Re: [foxboro] DM Usage

If your users have fixed IP addresses you better add them to the host table
of the AW or WP.
If not, you may need to implement dynamic DNS of some sort and update you
DNS through your DHCP server. The DM usage display in both cases will then
show the hostname of the "offender".

We once did a setup for a customer with a DHCP and DNS server using dynamic
updates. We had an Mandrake Linux box for our testbed. Works like a charm.
We even wrote a manual about it for those interested...

What you need with DHCP hosted X-terminals:

-A DHCP server providing IP to the X-terinals
-A Fixed IP for the UNIX host
-A DDNS Server that works with the DHCP Server
-A small mod to the /etc/resolv.conf and /etc/nsswitch files

Examples:
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
++
/etc/resolv.conf
[AW51RD /etc/resolv.conf]
domain domain.org < the domain that is inserted when no FQDN is used
nameserver 192.168.1.1 < the IP of your nameserver
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
++
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
++
/etc/nsswitch.conf
::::::::::::::
nsswitch.conf
::::::::::::::
#
# /etc/nsswitch.files:
#
# An example file that could be copied over to /etc/nsswitch.conf; it
# does not use any naming service.
#
# "hosts:" and "services:" in this file are used only if the
# /etc/netconfig file has a "-" for nametoaddr_libs of "inet" transports.

passwd:     files
group:      files
hosts: files dns < add the dns entry here
networks:   files
protocols:  files
rpc:        files
ethers:     files
netmasks:   files
bootparams: files
publickey:  files
# At present there isn't a 'files' backend for netgroup; the system will#
figure it out pretty quickly, and won't use netgroups at all.
netgroup:   files
automount:  files
aliases:    files
services:   files
sendmailvars:   files

Hope this helps

Subject: [foxboro] DM Usage

Greeting, All Wise and All Knowing List.

Is there a way to figure out the IP address of remote DM connections?
There are remote desktop users, not listed in the /etc/hosts file, that camp
out on a DM. They are supposed to release it when not in use. The DM usage
display shows the first 2 octets of the address, I need the last 2. Then I
can send the IT 'Enforcers' out to pay a friendly visit...

Thanks,
Rick Mol
