Re: [foxboro] DM Locked Up with Go-Global

Alan,

I have been killing ghosted GoGlobal sessions for some time now. The =
procedure is not very elegant, but it works. Still, use it at your own =
risk!

1. Run "som" from the command prompt. This is a program that lists =
(very weirdly) the open Object Manager lists on the AW, among many other =
features. When som starts, type in "opdb" at the command prompt. You =
will get a list of open OM lists by UNIX process ID and by OM list =
number. Write these process ID's on a sheet of paper. Next to each =
Process ID, write down the number of the OM lists associated with that =
Process ID. Some Process ID's have more than one OM list associated =
with it. Also, you may have more than one page of OM lists and Process =
ID's. If so, type in "m opdb" to see the next page, and type it in =
again for the third page, and so on, until all the open lists are shown. =
Type "q" and enter to quit.
2. After you have copied all the OM lists and their associated Process =
ID's, from the command prompt run the command "ps -ef|grep" and then the =
Process ID number, as in "ps -ef|grep 12345". If the Process ID exists, =
and the process is a DM or Foxview, or something that may be associated =
with the Object Manager, like FoxAPI, leave it alone. If nothing is =
returned, then you have a ghosted DM. Mark all the ghosted DM's on your =
handy piece of paper.
3. This step is optional, but I always go back in som and double check =
the ghosted DM Process ID's against the OM list numbers I wrote down =
just to be sure I don't kill a good OM list by mistake.
4. Finally, run "omtool" at the command prompt. BE VERY, VERY CAREFUL =
USING THIS TOOL! You will get a menu of functions. Select "OMCLOSE" =
from the menu, and type in the number of the first ghosted OM list (not =
the Process ID, but the number of the actual list). Hit enter, and then =
type in the next ghosted OM list, until you have run through the whole =
list. Finally, hit "e" to exit.

I'm not sure, since we haven't had this problem crop up much ever since =
we switched from GoGlobal to VNC, but your ghosted DM's should be =
removed from the Available DM list using this procedure.

You should definitely consider using a different remote DM solution. =
GoGlobal has had serious problems since the most recent release, and we =
decided to abandon it in favor of VNC, which is free and works pretty =
well. There are several resources here on the list for VNC, and you can =
get the software at www.realvnc.com. Hummingbird eXceed is also an =
excellent solution, although pricey and with more features than you =
probably need.

Good luck.

Subject: [foxboro] DM Locked Up with Go-Global

I have a question for all of you Go-Global users. We are having a =
problem
with multiple Go-Global DM's running on a single AW. We have 5 DM's =
that
can run on this AW remotely using Go-Global. We are seeing the DM will
disappear on the remote computer but the AW will not release that DM to =
be
used. It's like the AW has a hold of it but it won't let go. I suspect =
it
has to do with the improper shutdown of the DM but that's another =
problem.
The real problem is that the only way to free up the DM is to reboot the
AW!!! We can't kill the DM or stop it via the DM usage display. Up to =
this
point Foxboro hasn't given us an answer and we are getting tired of =
having
to reboot the AW. Has anyone else seen this type of behavior and if so =
what
was the fix?

Thanks,

Alan Schaff
