Re: [foxboro] Copying Displays to remote workstations

Thanks for the suggestions, but I still have a few concerns.

As I understand it, a lot of the available programs (such as rdist) want to
keep identical copies of the files on different workstations based on
modification dates and file sizes. The problem with that is the Display
manager optimizes the displays when they are first opened, thus changing
them. So the next time the script executes, the optimization gets wiped out
- even if the display was "Up to date." (Correct me if I am wrong here)

I was thinking of writing a program that runs on a server. Basically, it
would scan user defined directories once in a while looking for a display
file that has changed. It would then send these files to the clients. The
server would keep track of which files have been updated and when they were
updated for each client- removing the need for checking modification dates,
file sizes, etc for the reasons above. Also, if would keep network traffic
down except for when the displays are actually copied.

It is also a requirement that the files be optimized/packed after they are
copied - Just like GetRemFiles. I thought about doing an rcp followed by
rexec/rsh calling pdfpack, but I figured there would be an easier, foxboro
tested, way. Also rcp/rexec may require a password entry which cannot be
supplied on the command line...although I can configure the system to not
require one.

The last option is to write a client that will accept the files from the
server (like rdist) and pack/optimize the files when it recieves them. Not
difficult, but potentially error or hacker prone.

Thanks,
Tod Baudais.
