Re: [foxboro] Control Loops.

My suggestion is a way that we use to handle large numbers of control loops
rather than what number actually constitutes "too many".

For operators that handle large numbers of control loops (a few of our
operators manage over 1000 loops), we have designed overview displays that
show a graphic representation of all equipment components that make up their
area of the process. Each of the graphics of the components show data that
we determined to be critical to the "health" of that component. If a
component is displaying trouble, the operator can select the graphic of that
component which takes them to another display containing very detailed
information of all loops in that component. In areas that require more than
one overview we have either provided additional monitors or forward and
backward arrows that allow the operator to "scroll" through the overviews.

I'm not suggesting that we are unique in the way that we deal with it. In
my situation, I was not authorized to determine how many points an operator
was going to watch. My charge was to determine the most efficient way for
them to manage the number of points they were going to get anyway. <shrug>
I imagine that my situation is the norm for those of us that do what we do.
I hope this helps, if you end up in the same situation.
