Re: [foxboro] Can alarms be directed to somewhere other than a printer?

We also use the same package but have added a little enhancement to it. =
I created a small VB application that takes the files on a Hourly and =
Daily basis, renames the files and runs a small ftp script that sends =
them to a designated place on a Windows FTP server. This makes the files =
available to everyone in the plant and opens up other opportunities like =
other VB applications that allow you to cross reference Alarms to OAJ =
actions. The application also cleans up files older then a year on the =
PC and we have a different retention policy for the FTP server. Of =
course to do this you have to tie the PC to the network which can make =
the PC visible to your I.T. department so be ready for that battle.

We run a software called Visual Alert from 2TSI (WWW.2TSI.COM) on an old =
PC
to capture all alarms (process and system ) from the I/A. To set it up, =
we
unplugged the printer cable from the line printer on the I/A (via
commprocessor) and plugged it to the com port on an old PC. The =
challenge
is to get the pin out correct before plugging it to the com port. After
that, we start the Visual Alert and it starts capturing system and =
process
alarms from I/A. The software will create a new alarm file every day so =
we
can archive them as needed. The cost of printer paper and printer
ribbons, and the problem of paper jammed outweighs the cost of the
software.

Can process alarms be directed somewhere (say a script),
other than a physical printer?

I'm thinking of sending them to netcat, so I capture them on
another machine WO having to keep commprocessors happy.
