List,
Immediately after posting to the list that searches on the CSC
website appeared to be working for me, one of my colleagues asked me how
many SINK IPC connections a ZCP270 could support. In trying to view the
data on the new "Invensys GPS" website I experienced the problems
described below in this email. They boil down to the following:
1. When I tried to send the email using the Contact Us-->Email Webmaster
dropdown, my message bounced even after Alex and Ken Gilbert thought the
problem had been corrected. Ken later sent the following:
Ken Gilbert replied: We found someone had changed the alias for
ips.csc.web@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx to something new. We are working on that
issue right now.
Tom VandeWater: I tested it this morning and it didn't bounce so appears
to be working correctly.
2. The search function returned erratic/inconsistent results as
described later in this email.
Ken Gilbert replied: We are currently experiencing an INDEXing problem
with the search page. We have initiated a new indexing task which
should be available within an hour. The current search engine may be
acting erratic until the Full Index is complete.
Tom VandeWater: I tested the search problem I described below again
this morning with the same results. When I used the standard search and
then input:
zcp ipc
I didn't find anything. If I entered:
zcp270 ipc
Two hits were returned. This may just be inadequacies in the search
tool Foxboro is using.
3. A problem when left-clicking the hyperlinked hits returned in the
query above caused an XML error to be returned when using Internet
Explorer as the browser. Mozilla Firefox correctly opened the
hyperlinked document. I thought it was a problem with the way my
corporatized settings were made for MS IE at work so I had my wife try
it on IE at home and it responded with the same error. Mozilla worked
correctly at home also.
Tom VandeWater: Today I don't get the error when left-clicking the
document hyperlink from Internet Explorer but it generates a "text-only"
rendition of the document in the window below the search hyperlinks as I
think it did before. When left-clicking the same hyperlink with Firefox
it actually downloads/opens the .pdf document as most would expect.
Duc's theory is that it is a function of complex java-scripting that
causes MS IE to open the document in a different way than Firefox. The
Firefox results are much better.
As many have probably noted, the old CSC website, is being
actively transformed to the new GPS, (Global Product Support Website).
This new GPS,(Global Positioning System ;<), is already appreciated by
me, Duc, and Kevin because the old one was so MS-centric that our
browser of choice, Mozilla Firefox couldn't view all of the content due
to Microsofts ego-centric view of the WWW. Score one for Invensys for
listening and correcting this situation on their website.
Ken mentioned that they are actively working on implementing a
new and improved search facility. I want to re-iterate something I've
said before. Even though I don't think it is perfect, IMHO the
Foxboro/Invensys/CSC/GPS website has been the most valuable tool for our
use that they have ever provided. We use it on a daily basis to
knowledgeably perform our jobs. It organizes complex data and documents
that are continually being edited and updated. Yes, it is sometimes
hard to find exactly what you are looking for but this IS an enormous
task that requires a lot of their resources to support. It is
recognized by all as being the single source of their published
documentation. (one source/server, unlimited "secure" clients throughout
the world, and a universal HMI to view the data)! 20 years ago who
would have envisioned it? It sounds a lot like the same mechanism I
envision using to view all the data on our control systems in the
future. Unless some other revolutionary technology surfaces, that is
how it will be. Jump on board or be left in the dust!
I still say Invensys needs to come up to speed on the use of
email as a valid communication medium. We have been thwarted at every
attempt when trying to get response via normal email requests. If a
tracking/logging/response mechanism is in place as Alex suggests, it
needs a lot more work and attention. This list is a classic example of
the value of email and Duc's email today explaining how he manages the
list and protects it from spammers proves that it can be done
effectively. I praise him for his efforts and attention to detail.
Maybe Invensys should pay him to institute an effective system;<)

Tom VandeWater at Dow Corning here. I have a problem that now
appears to be specific to MS IE Explorer. I described it and tried to
send an email to:
ips.csc.web@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
but it bounced as shown below. My problem is defined after the bounce
message immediately following.

When initiating a search from:
http://ips.csc.invensys.com/home.asp
Using the standard search window I enter:
zcp ipc
I am directed to:
http://ips.csc.invensys.com/Library/Search.asp?pr=3DExternal&query=3Dzcp+=
ipc
where I receive the following message:
Invensys Search: zcp ipc
No documents match the query.=20
Suggestions:
Make sure all words are spelled correctly.=20
Try different keywords.=20
Try more general keywords.
If I enter:
zcp270 ipc
in the search
I am directed to a page:
http://ips.csc.invensys.com/Library/Search.asp?pr=3DExternal&query=3Dzcp2=
70+
+ipc
where I am presented with two documents returned by the search engine:
Invensys Search: zcp270 ipc
Page: 1 (1-2 of 2 documents, newest first)
1. PSS 21H-1B10 B3 * PRODUCT SPECIFICATIONS * I/ASeries Hardware

2. PSS 21H-1C4 B3 * PRODUCT SPECIFICATIONS * I/ASeries Hardware

1. PSS 21H-1B10 B3 * PRODUCT SPECIFICATIONS * I/ASeries Hardware
The text above appears to be correctly linked to:
http://resource.invensys.com/iaseries/pss/21h1/21h1b10b3.pdf
2. PSS 21H-1C4 B3 * PRODUCT SPECIFICATIONS * I/ASeries Hardware
The text above appears to be correctly linked to:
http://resource.invensys.com/iaseries/pss/21h1/21h1c4b3.pdf
and yet when I left click on the link for the above documents from your
page:
http://ips.csc.invensys.com/Library/Search.asp?pr=3DExternal&query=3Dzcp2=
70+
+ipc
I receive the following Microsoft Internet Explorer error in a separate
pop-up window:
"Could not find the opening root element "Hits" in the following XML:
<!-- Texis RDBMS Copyright (c) 1992 - 2002 Thunderstone - EPI, Inc. -->
<!-- Texis Web Script Copyright (c) 1996 - 2002 Thunderstone-EPI, Inc.
-->"
If I right click on the link and select "OPEN" the document successfully
opens as expected.
I wasn't sure if this was a problem with my Corporatized Microsoft
Internet Explorer browser settings or with the way the INVENSYS html/XML
works with Internet Explorer. We tested it with a non-corporatized
Mozilla Firefox and it works as expected when left clicking either link.
I had a friend check using both Mozilla Firefox and MS Internet Explorer
from home and they experienced the same problem when using MS Internet
Explorer but things worked correctly with FireFox.
In addition, I would have thought the search for:
zcp ipc
would have returned the same two documents, (and maybe others), as the
search for:
zcp270 ipc
I would like to know what I need to do or what you need to do to make
left clicking the links on your website work like all other hyperlinks
in my IE browser.
I would also like to understand why your search engine returns no
documents when I search for
zcp ipc
and two documents when I search for:
zcp270 ipc
We were told by Alex Johnson that the webmaster email addresses on the
GPS site were corrected but they still don't work for us.
I know you are undergoing some major changes on your website and are
obviously experiencing some technical difficulties. I do appreciate
that the new one works well with Mozilla Firefox because I use it
exclusively at home but am "encouraged" to use IE at work. We use the
website as our technical point of reference on a daily basis and it is
very important to us.
