Re: [foxboro] Broken Concatenated Disk

Well I'm now on day two of my disk problems . .

My replacement disks are working well, and I have been experimenting with
the old disks.

I can boot off a cdrom and then mount the main disk, and see every file on
the drive.

But if I try to boot off the drive I get an error:

Cannot mount root on /pseudo/md@0:0,0,blk fstype ufs
panic: vfs_mountroot: cannot mount root

I'm pretty sure this disk is ok, but I can't seem to find the magic file
the kernel is reading (or can't read) to mount the root.

I've checked the /etc/system file and it has a line missing and is
timestamped yesterday. Adding the line back in does not help, so I think it
is looking for something else. (devs, devices, ???)

missing line:
* Begin MDD database info (do not edit)
set md:mddb_bootlist1="sd:27:16 sd:27:1050 sd:27:2084"
* End MDD database info (do not edit)

Poking around in the Sun docs I found that the mddb.tab file has the same
block #'s, so I think the mddb is the problem, but since I can't mount the
root on boot I can't access the meta utilities.

Anyone have any ideas?

OK, So: the problem has gone away?
I suggest we enjoy the moment.

When I follow your procedure (in theory, I haven't tried it for real) I
seems to me that you first restored everything and you ran into trouble
after which you restore all partitions manually but NO the metabd partition.
Maybe there somewhere hidden deep below lies the clue. I don't have another.
Unable to mount the "root" does ring a "metadb bell".
