I may have over-spoken when I mentioned DVD copying, as I don't know for
sure a DVD will work. I personally don't like the Windows XP method of
copying data to CDs, but have used it a bit, even though I find it very
klutzy. My personal experience using Windows XP copy to CD is limited to
copying files to R+ CDs.
I would give this one more try with a known new CD that you have never
tried to copy files to (to make sure a previous attempt to copy did not
close or otherwise mess up the CD).
I never create CDs on the Windows Foxboro boxes as thumb drives are
easier and cheap ($12-$15 for 4GB). I use my personal PC with ROXIO for
CD backups, copying, etc.

That thought came up shortly after I sent the email and I thought I was
a total dummy for not trying that first. So I did during lunch and no
is the answer. And here's what I think is going on.
When I dragged and dropped the files to be archived onto the DVDRW/CDRW
drive, I keep getting an error to the effect that the drive wasn't
ready. When I removed the blank DVD, a CD writer screen appears with
the message that the CD writing process was terminated prematurely with
the opening of the drive, and that I should enter a blank disk to
continue. I put the DVD back in and got the message stating that the
disk was not recognized. I repeated the process again trying CD and DVD
disks, and got the same results in both attempts.
I verified that the drive can read CD's, but don't have any DVD's laying
around.
Could it be the drive configuration? I didn't see anything odd on the
drive property.

You can use drag and drop with Windows XP to write files to the CD/DVD,
if that is what you are looking for.

Thanks, Ed.
I took a look at the Symantec website and the B0700DC document. I think
it will serve nicely as a backup tool. For our small operation, we most
likely will go with the option to backup onto external hard drive rather
than a server.
I still have a DVD issue on which I would greatly appreciate some
feedback. Our P92's come standard with DVD-RW drive. I did not see any
program installed for allow for usage. Onto that fact, we are
instructed that installing a program like Roxio can affect support
level, warranty, and, most importantly, IA operation.
How do we then use this drive to write DVD's?

Thom,
I have never had much luck with backups done to cd's/dvd's that span
multiple media.
I have done a ton of work at the site I am a Resident at with both Live
State Recovery and it's successor Backup Exec System Recovery.
I currently have roughly 175 P90, P91, P92 boxes on 18 independent I/A
Systems(7.1.1, 8.0b, 8.1, 8.2, 8.3, 8.4.1) backing up to three different
P91 servers over a network using the integrated Nics. All the systems
are connected to a network using the integrated nics because we sue a
lot fo OPC between systems. Each box makes a full backup each week to
one of two servers and we keep three backups. Each box makes a Monthly
backup to the third server and we retain one backup. The sole function
of this backup is in case of a Hurricane, will do a quick check to make
sure all the backups are there and we will shut the server down and move
it to a Secure location.
We have also used BESR to schedule backups on systems before they are
installed at the plant to USB hard drives. Works quite well on the later
P92's and servers with UBS2.0 ports. USB 1.1 is painfully slow.
Operations never knows when the backups run. We have been doing this for
about three years now. Started small and expanded as we grew.
I don't have any experience using Roxio. I would encourage you to use
Backup Exec System Recovery, not because I said soor because I work for
Invensys, but because it is extensively tested and supported by
Invensys.
I have probably restored at least 100 times using both programs, not
because we had that many issues, but usually because we constantly seem
to be testing something and it is so easy to restore a backup and test
on a box in a test bed. Restoring a box is really pretty easy. Boot on
the Recovery CD, set up the network connection and tell it which backup
to load. It does work best if restoring to like hardware. BESR has the
ability to restore anywhere, but we don't use it because it may load an
untested DLL file. My attitude about restoring to new unlike hardware is
that I can day 0 load a box in a couple of hours and I restore any files
or directories from the BESR backup easily.
The best part about this is that I never worry about having a current
backup. It is never over a week old. If we are installing a system and
doing Hot Cutovers, I frequently set it up to backup every day until we
finish cutovers.
The Invensys document is available on the GCS website. B0700DC.
Regards,
Ed

I know Foxboro has a few 'certified' products that they recommend for
backing up the server. These products apparently have been tested and
do not conflict with any Foxboro applications.
I'm thinking about using Roxio software to backup files from our P91
server and two P92's onto DVD's. Has anyone use Roxio and experience
operational conflict? Better yet, can someone share the backup products
that work for their system?
Thanks,
t
