Re: [foxboro] Backup procedures

This is just my 2 cents, but forget CDs or DVDs. Go with an add-on USB
hard-drive (cheap).

I also highly recommend Symantec Backup Exec. It's a little pricey for
P91s, but is cheap for P92s. You don't absolutely have to buy it from
Foxboro, as I bought it cheaper from Symantec and installed it a year
before Foxboro started selling it. However, I only did this because
Foxboro had not released it yet. I recommend buying this product through
Foxboro for support in case of problems. I cannot see a problem with
justifying about $2K per P91 or $300 per P92 for reliable backups.

You can automate the USB hard-drive backup process to retain the number
of backups you want to retain before overwriting. The only drawback to
this solution is the fact that these USB hard-drives are cheap and do
have a higher than average failure hard-drive rate due to heat and fan
failure(my quesstimate 5-10 years). However, these USB hard-drives are
much more dependable than the DVDs you suggest. You also need to copy
these backup USB hard-drives to a floating USB hard-drive you keep in a
safe location elsewhere. If you manually make manual backups, instead of
automating the process, the USB hard-drive dependability factor is
irrelevant if you power down the USB hard-drives between backups.

The current recommended Foxboro solution presented at the last IA users
group is 2nd Ethernet connections to a reliable (aka expensive) backup
server. I did hear some silliness about using an existing intranet
Server for this. Although I agree this may be the best backup solution
(if the backup server is on an isolated network (not the intranet), I
don't agree this is most reliable solution for your control system. I
have been bitten once (as in plant-wide WP/AW lockup) by installing 2nd
Ethernet ports on the Foxboro WP/AWs for convenience and it won't happen
to me again.

Subject: [foxboro] Backup procedures

I know Foxboro has a few 'certified' products that they recommend for
backing up the server. These products apparently have been tested and
do not conflict with any Foxboro applications.

I'm thinking about using Roxio software to backup files from our P91
server and two P92's onto DVD's. Has anyone use Roxio and experience
operational conflict? Better yet, can someone share the backup products
that work for their system?

Thanks,
