Hi Alex,
it is true that 'data' files might not be complete. Altough I think that the
file system is getting flushed before the actual un-mirror. No files are
left open on the second hard disk.
Point is that by the time you want to restore a system from tape those
'data' files are no longer of any relevance anyway. Well, that's in our case
the fact.
In our audit of the viability of the tapes, we also restored the raw
Informix partition with full success. We compared tables in the life system
with the restored system and they were up to date to the point of where we
un-mirrored the system.
A few general rules should be implemented like not running any of the
configurators/display builder etc. while doing the un-mirroring. Once
un-mirroring is complete (only takes a few seconds), the system is free for
all again.

Are you sure that that will always work?
I can envision a file that is in use. Say half of it has been updated and
half remains to be updated when you unmirror.
Now you make your backup.
The main machine fails.
You restore from the backup.
The application reads the file and decides that it is inconsistant and
cannot be used. Worse yet, because of the inconsistencies the wrong product
is made - think recipe files.
Just something to think about.
It's not perfect, but we offered the On-line Hierarchical File System tool
to make backups on line. it's major limitation is that it supports only rfs
file names (16 characters).

If you have a mirrored system, you can backup the mirrored disk in
multi-user mode with no problems at all.
Make a copy of the foxboro supplied /usr/local/dump.51 and call it
something
like /usr/local/dump.mirror.
Modify this script to point to the second (mirrored) hard disk.
Unmirror the system disk with /usr/local/dft UNMIRROR_SYS
Run the newly created script /usr/local/dump.mirror
Once finished re-mirror the system with /usr/local/dft MIRROR_SYS
You can check the progress of the mirroring with /usr/local/dft
SHOW_STATUS
The advantage of this is that there is no system down time at all.
All our mirrored systems are done like this and for auditing purposes we
restored a tape onto a spare system to prove that this way of backing up
is
good way of backing up.

Thanks. Yeah the idea was to reduce the time AW remains in single user.
And as i said, i was just wondering. And now after listening to Warren &
you I have stopped wondering also.

A lot. Simply don't do it.
If you want to reduce downtime while doing=20
dd backups or dumps use a second harddisk=20
for this, boot in single user mode, dump the live=20
harddisk to the second harddisk (which usually=20
only takes around 20 minutes for not tooo big=20
harddisks on standard style C or E 51 machines),=20
reboot in multi user mode again and then=20
backup this second harddisk to whatever=20
(slow) medium you want.
