Re: [foxboro] ArchestrA related question

Using an NCNI module and a switch (2 of each if you have redundant Nodebus),
you can add the new 1 Gigabit switched Ethernet network to your existing
Nodebus network. In January, Invensys will start shipping the new Solaris 8
and Windows XP workstations which use the 1 Gb network. This new
workstation could co-exist with your existing system, using the NCNI to
communicate between your Nodebus system and the 1 Gb network. The new
Solaris 8 workstation can't host any of your current CP's, of course, but if
you just need Solaris 8 for some reason, the NCNI will allow you to install
a Solaris 8 machine on the new 1 Gb network and still talk to the old
Nodebus nodes.

Invensys will start shipping the new CP70's, which use the 1Gb network,
sometime in 2003.

As Corey said, the idea is to transition from the old Nodebus to the new 1
Gb network over time, using the NCNI to interface the two networks.
Eventually, Invensys is hoping you'll replace all your old CP's with CP70's,
and all your AW/WP51's with XP and Solaris 8 stations, and the Nodebus will
go away. But until you can or want to do that, you can have a hybrid
system.

We have a similar situation. The local Foxboro rep said we need to
upgrade
entire system to a new version (7?) to have a Solaris 8 based
station. We
run on version 6.1. If someone gets more information, please share
with us
        here.

I haven't seen any traffic in the last week, I hope this forum is
still
        up.

I'm seeking input on replacing two dual headed "B" boxes
workstations in
        January when funds are available.

Should we go with the new and improved ethernet XP platforms?
Should we go with the next generation of Sun platform on ethernet?
Should we stay with the nodebus only, and upgrade the "B" boxes to
"D"?

At the Orlando conference, I understood that after January, Foxboro
won't
be shipping "D" boxes for new installations. They will supply the
new Sun
platforms running Solaris 8 that replace the "D" box.

We have a small I/A system, municipal water treatment, running
V6.1.2
with two "E" hosts, one "D" workstation and 2 "B" dual head
workstations.

Thanks in advance for any input.
