Neil,
In sample mode, a controller only updates the output when there is a new
measurement (true with "continuous" measurements as well). That's the
advantage of sample mode. It prevents wind-up between samples. That doesn't
mean there's no integral action.
The best thing to do is use the analyzer control to set an intermediate
controller that does have a continuous measurement, like a tray temperature
for distillation control.
