Hi Anton,

we use Matux live CD to backup the harddisk on to an external USB disk
or a network share.

http://www.genunix.org/distributions/martux/marTux_0.2/

dd if=3D/dev/rdsk/<disk> bs=3D1024b | gzip -c >/<mount
point>/<Hostname>_<YYYYMMDD>.gz
