You should be able to do so.  I've only done this off-site to an older SLC's DF1
port, but as I recall the issues were:
1) cabling took some time to figure out
2) BUSOPT and PCADDR are not used - no data highway addresses needed
3) Make sure that in System Definition you don't use heartbeat - this heartbeat
is to monitor the link between the gateway and the KF2.  ECB15 HBEAT is a
different heartbeat - this is a DF1 diagnostic loopback command that the
PLC/device responds to - use it if your feeder supports it.

The Integrators for Allen Bradley manual briefly discusses direct-connect but
unfortunately does not discuss cabling.
