Iskandariah,
I have done this before and it is not as cumbersome as you think. There are
no other ways to do it. OSI soft tech support guys are THE BEST.

Subject: Re: [foxboro] Accidentally deleted PI tag
Hi lists,
Anyone knows any simple low risk method of recovering data from a deleted
PI tag. I think the procedure below from OSI is too cumbersome.
Kind regards,

Roslan,
Data for a deleted tag can only be recovered if the following information
is available; PointID, RecNo & TagName of the deleted tag. Without these 3
attributes, data recovery is not possible.
From Tech Support website, the recovery steps are:
1. BACKUP THE SYSTEM.
2. Gather all required information from above. This method, with some minor
modifications, works just like the method described in Appendix F of the PI
Data Archive, VOL II System Management guide (version 3.3 release). The
section is called "Merging Two PI3 Systems".
3. Prepare a comma separated values (.CSV) file (generally using notepad or
Excel) that contains the PointID, RecNo, TagName (in that order) for all
tags in the PI system, including the deleted points to be recovered. The
PointID and RecNo refer to the data in the old or source archive. The
TagName refers to the tag in the target PI system.
4. If the data you want to convert is contained in the Primary Archive
(Archive 0 in the piartool -al listing) then you will need to force a shift
of that archive using piartool -fs.
5. Create the new PI Tags with the same attributes as the tags that were in
the other PI system, or that had been deleted. The TagNames do not have to
match the old TagNames from the other PI system or old archive. Just make
sure that the TagName you create is in the .CSV file created in step 3.
6. Unmount the archive to be converted using piartool -au <full path to
archive file>. Or copy the old or source archive the target PI3 server.
7. Create the binary ID conversion file: piartool -idci <full path to .CSV
file> -idco <full path to binary file to be created>
8. Run the Offline Archive Utility: piarchss -id <full path to id
conversion binary file> -if <source archive file> -of <new archive file> -f
<size in MB>. This will create a Fixed Archive file that can participate in
Archive Shifts. If you leave out the -f parameter a dynamic archive will be
created (non-shiftable).
9. Mount the newly created archive and check for recovered data: piartool
-ar <full path to archive file>. You will not need the old archive anymore.
10. BACKUP THE SYSTEM, AGAIN. You should make a backup of the system
immediately after the data is verified. Also, keep the old converted
archive file on some backup media for some time until you are sure it is
not needed, like you forgot to convert another tag.

Adlan,
Is there any simple low risk method of retrieving data of a tag that has
been deleted?
