It probably doesn't on *real* Unix.... :)
Seriously, I do wonder if it is some kind of delayed writing going on in
Windows. I will experiment on our AW70 when I get a chance.

Interesting problem ...
I don't see why rm would leave a locked file handle after it terminates.
The problem must be somewhere else.
Try using some other variable name instead of HISTFILE in your script.
