Oswald,
As a rule, freeing space on your disk drive will NOT speed up your AW.
The most common performance problems are caused by:
1) Insufficient RAM which leads to increased disk activity during the
operation of your programs
2) Simply too many CPU intensive programs.
If the problem is a shortage of RAM, the solution is to add RAM to the
machine.
If the problem is simply too many CPU intensive applications, i.e., you =
have
no paging, but are still too slow, you need an additional box or a
different box.
There is one other possibiltiy - you have a 2nd Ethernet connection and =
it
is seeing IPX/SPX traffic. This will lead to loss of free RAM and slow
performance over a period of time.
To determine what is causing you problem, try these steps:
1) Stop any applications using the 2nd Ethernet port (PI, IP.21, AIM*,
remote DM/FV, etc.)
2) Turn off the 2nd Ethernet port using the ifconfig command. I can't
remember the syntax, but the man pages
can show you. It is something like ifconfig hme1 -off. Do NOT =
shutoff
the Nodebus port (le0 or hme0 most likely).
3) Check your performance. Has it improved? If so, you most likely have =
the
SPX/IPX traffic problem. Either your
company uses Novell or you have new printer on the network that has =
its
Novell support option enabled.
4) If that did not help - or does not apply - run 'vmstat 5 24' to get =
a
couple of minutes of data on the performance
of your machine. Examine the two memory columns (swap and free) and =
the
paging columns (mf, etc.). If the free
RAM is low (<10,000 for example) and the faults are high (mf in =
double
digits), you need more RAM. Your CPU
time is being spent moving program code to and from the hard disk. =
Check
the id (idle) column to see your free
CPU time.
5) If it does not appear that you have a RAM shortage, check the id =
column
for free CPU time. If it is low (<50%),
you have too much work going on OR you have a program that is =
consuming
too much time.
6) If it appears that you have enough RAM, but are over loaded. =
Determine
what program is consuming the CPU by
eitther:
a) Using 'top'
Go to www.sunfreeware.com and load the utility 'top' for =
Solaris
2.5.1 and install it. Run top and look at the big
CPU consumers. They will be at the top of the list - hence the
name.
b) Using (ps -el ; sleep 100 ; ps -el) | sort. If I got the syntax
right, this command will record the RAM and CPU
seconds consumed for each process. Using that data you can
determine who's using the time.
As always, if you download and install code, be careful. I've used top =
on
several machines, but...

Satisfaction Center.
Hope this helps.

Alex Johnson

Subject: [foxboro] AW51 is too slow
Hi list
=20
I've got a very serious problem with one my AW51 stations. The terminal
is too slow to run basic applications and tasks with displays and
everything. I know my problem has a lot to do with the fact that I =
don't
have much free memory. I know there's some space I can recover by doing
some cleaning of the machine.
=20
Can anybody give me some tips about what files I can eliminate without
affecting the machine=B4s performance?
=20
I deleted some *.old files I had somewhere and that gave some disk
blocks but I don't know what else to try. I also checked the mail box, =
I
know it gets huge sometimes. I deleted the core too..
