the following exchange took place:
> Why isn't Invensys Foxboro able to recognize this gap...
# Invensys DOES recognize this. Unfortunately we from Invensys have to work
with our own software, so we suffer at least as you customer guys do. ;-)
> ...and offer a solution?
# I can tell you that Invensys is working on that, but up to now I can't
tell you when and what you'll get, maybe I can later.
It seems to me like there is an opportunity for something along the lines
of "open code" development. Clearly, there are some very talented
programmers in the user community (I wouldn't count myself in that group,
and I'm happy to learn what little I can from just being in their
presence.) There are also programmers within Invensys-Foxboro who create
tools for their own use when they recognize a limitation in "standard
offering". If a user feels an area can be improved or augemented (and is
willing & able to create an improvement), then it's likely that other users
will find that improvement useful too. Cassandra provides a way for users
to share these ideas, but I, for one, only found this mailing list & the
Cassandra website by accident a year or so ago, and that after working with
I/A for over 15 years.
Realizing that various legal things would need to be worked around, can
Foxboro "sanction" the user-based development community, somehow, by
providing access to "look & feel" code, database structural information,
and other various codelets used by Foxboro products to access those
databases. I'm never one for "re-inventing" the wheel, where I can
borrow/steal/buy a solution from someone else.
