As Tom has mentioned, you can, but don't have to add an AIN block. The RIN
block has "almost" all the same features as the AIN, but, the biggest issue I
have found is that even though it has alarming capability, it does not have the
alarm signal out for triggering external blocks with a Boolean bit or use in a
CALCA block. If you don't use the AIN, then to achieve the Boolean trigger, you
will need to add REALM blocks. If you have the block count availability, I
think the AIN off the RIN block I the way to go. Then all your displays and
such could work directly off the AIN and you would still have a Boolean alarm
trigger output if needed.

The AIN and MAIN blocks can be used but cannot actually read data
directly from an FDSI Device/Register. You have to read the data in with a DCI
block such as an IIN or RIN block and then pass the output out of them to the
.MEAS parameter of the AIN. You would only need to do that if you use generic
AIN faceplates on all your displays or have special signal conditioning or
alarm conditions not available in an IIN or RIN block. Those DCI blocks have
been modified over time to include most of the alarm parameters of an AIN
block.
